The distinctive feature of colloidal silver is the fact that it has more silver nanoparticles than it has silver ions.
It was back in the 90s that the title colloidal silver was designated for the product by the Colloidal Science Laboratory.
In order for colloidal silver to be attached with the label true it needed to have a high concentration of nanoparticles in its total silver content.
It is only when the nanoparticle content is in majority over the silver ions that colloidal silver gains the above mentioned title.
True colloidal silver measurements
The exact silver content can be measured in parts per millions using a technique known as atomic emission spectroscopy.
PPM gives us the exact ratio of silver to the liquid in which it is suspended. If a reading shows nPPM it goes to show that the water solution has n milligrams of silver content.
As mentioned above true colloidal silver refers to the concentration of silver nanoparticles in the liquid and not the total silver concentration.
True silver colloids can thrive in any colloidal silver liquid irrespective of its concentration as long as nanoparticles form the majority of the substance.
It is important for individuals to know that the products being sold as ionic silver in the market have a much lower nanoparticle content as compared to true colloidal silver.
How to determine true colloidal silver
In order to determine whether a silver concentration is true colloidal silver or not the nanoparticle concentration must be calculated independent of the silver ion content.
Since most silver concentration products had both nanoparticles and silver ions it was essential to develop a means of separating the two.
The correct process for separating the silver nanoparticles from the silver ions came about after years of trial and error.
Scientists were able to calculate the G-forces and time intervals that would be required to separate the two liquids.
Scientists were also able to determine the separation of the two liquids using dynamic light scattering techniques. A powerful beam would be used to pass through the liquids.
Individual photons from the nanoparticles could then be figured out.
Digital signal processing algorithms would then be used to process the reflected laser energy. This was a very important process that was essential to determine the value of true colloidal silver.
With the two items separated, figuring out whether the liquid concentration is true colloidal silver or not becomes obvious.
When the nanoparticles count is observed to be more than 50% the concentration will be termed as true colloidal silver.
Although scientists have developed the process mentioned above to determine the true value of colloidal silver, it is still a rather extensive and expensive method. Unfortunately there is no other alternative method to discern the same thing.
Many unverified colloidal silver products are being sold in the market as true colloidal silver products. However most of these products have not been checked using the above mentioned procedure.
